Balloon Assisted Maturation Case Study

Chameleon™ PTA balloon catheter

Using the Chameleon™ PTA balloon catheter to perform balloon assisted maturation (BAM) technique for AV fistula access.

Balloon assisted maturation (BAM) using the Chameleon PTA balloon catheter

Arteriovenous fistula creation assistance

Using percutaneous devices for arteriovenous fistula creation requires maturation procedures to prepare the site for adequate space and dialysis blood flow. While performing angioplasty, the Chameleon™ PTA balloon catheter’s unique features allow targeted visualization via the third contrast injection port and an exit port directly located at the target lesion — expanding access in the desired location.

Case review utilizing the Chameleon™ PTA balloon catheter:

  • Use of devices for fistula creation
  • Angioplasty performed at time of creation (5 mm balloon)
  • 2–3 inch wide anastomosis at time of fistula creation
  • Patient brought back 3 to 4 weeks after creation for balloon assisted maturation (using the radial artery as the primary access point)

1. Visualize vascular access

Angiogram to address underlying stenosis or inadequate flow.

2. Sheathless radial arterial access

Access of the radial artery utilizing a sheathless technique with the Chameleon™ PTA balloon catheter.

3. Perform angioplasty

Advancing of the 6×40 mm Chameleon™ PTA balloon catheter over the wire and positioning the proximal end of the balloon across the anastomosis. Performing angioplasty with pressures as high as 25 atm.

Note: Any other area(s) identified that need further angioplasty can also be approached and angioplasty performed.

4. Visualize final access

Contrast injected through the targeted injection port of the balloon without having to remove wire or move the balloon.

Adequate flow is restored, and both the balloon and wire are removed.
