Fibrin Sheath Disruption Case Study
Explore the ways physicians use the Chameleon™ PTA balloon catheter for paired fibrin sheath diagnosis, angioplasty, and results verification with one device.
Addressing fibrin sheath with the Chameleon™ PTA balloon catheter
Removing fibrin sheath is important to prevent the recurrence of catheter flow dysfunction in a new catheter. The Chameleon™ PTA balloon catheter visualizes the fibrin sheath during and after the angioplasty procedure by injecting contrast media through the catheter without using a sheath.

- Sheathless, maintaining wire access
- Use of 8×40 mm Chameleon™ PTA balloon catheter
- Immediate verification of procedure status

Fibrin sheath disruption procedural approach
1. Identification and diagnosis of fibrin sheath
- Guidewire is inserted through a catheter lumen
- The tunnel cuff is freed
- The tip of the catheter is pulled back into the proximal brachiocephalic vein over the wire under fluoroscopic guidance
- Contrast is injected through the other (open) lumen

2. Angioplasty performed using the Chameleon™ PTA balloon catheter
- Old catheter is removed over the wire
- Chameleon™ PTA balloon catheter is inserted over the same wire and positioned inside the fibrin sheath
- Serial tangential angioplasty disrupts the length of the fibrin sheath

3. Immediate post-angioplasty imaging using the integrated third port to confirm proper disruption
- The Chameleon™ PTA balloon catheter diagnostic port is positioned in the proximal brachiocephalic vein
- Contrast is injected via the integrated diagnostic port, providing post-angioplasty imaging
- Proper fibrin sheath disruption/removal is confirmed via contrast imaging
